Kitten Rescue is a non-profit organization dedicated to the rescue, rehabilitation and placement of homeless animals. In 2016 Kitten Rescue opened the Kitten Rescue Nursery, where they bottle feed orphaned, unweaned kittens around the clock. One of those kittens was Enzo Ferrari.

Enzo was rescued from a high kill shelter in April of this year. He was just a few days old. Even at his young age, it was very quickly obvious that Enzo was no "normal" kitten. When his eyes opened, they stared straight through you and had a perpetual look of shock on his face. He also walked in circles and seemed to attack the air. As he got older, the symptoms progressed. A trip to the neurologist confirmed that Enzo is "differently abled" - he has Hydrocephalus and is completely blind.

Hydrocephalus is a brain disease where spinal fluid collects around the brain, putting pressure on it. Without treatment, it causes headaches, seizures, and overall odd behavior. Untreated, cats with Hydrocephalus don't have a great prognosis - they don't tend to live past two years old and the condition can be extremely debilitating. With treatment, however, they can lead very high quality normal length lives. Kitten Rescue is committed to giving Enzo the best life possible.

At 4 months old, Enzo came to stay with us and begin medication. He is doing wonderfully on the meds and the neurologist is very hopeful about his future. On October 4, Enzo received an MRI at VCA West Los Angeles to determine the extent of his condition and his prognosis. It was determined that he has a great opportunity to live a full length and high quality life on the medication we have been giving him since he came into foster care. This is great news for Enzo and we are thrilled for him!

These procedures are expensive: The MRI cost $2200. His medication runs about $30 a month. Enzo is worth every penny. He loves life, loves playing with his foster mates, kicking around his mouse toys and foil balls, being petted and purring for humans, and eating treat straight out of your hand - a feat he accomplishes without ever biting a finger despite being blind :).

I am running the 2018 5K to raise funds for Enzo's MRI and continuing medication.

MRI: $2200

Medications: $30/month

More about Kitten Rescue:

Each year we rescue over 1,000 cats (and some dogs!) from the streets and city shelters and place them into new homes. Kitten Rescue is on the forefront of making Los Angeles a No-Kill City and they will not stop until all of the shelters are empty and every animal has a loving home.

Kitten Rescue is comprised of dedicated volunteers who devote much of their time to helping homeless animals, while juggling their own families, jobs and lives as best as they can! At any given time you may find them bottle feeding orphaned kittens, nursing sick cats and dogs to health, visiting high-kill shelters to save animals, running back and forth to veterinary clinics, trapping community cats for spay/neuter, feeding community cats, taming feral kittens, rehabilitating animals with behavioral issues, taking foster animals to adoption events, or delivering animals to their forever homes.

The Kitten Rescue Sanctuary is home to up to 150 special needs cats and around 1000 animals are cared for in foster homes at any given time.
